Steam vs Diesel or Electric... Over time efficiency goes up.. but elegance and nostalgia go out the window. With Steam there was uniqueness with each locomotive. With Diesels or Electrics, they are all mass produced with only numbers or paint jobs setting them apart. Seeing a Steam Engine go by was a real reason to watch from a station or sit on random areas of track because you get to live the moment easier then a Diesel going by.

This picture is a good comparison of 'Then and Now' but the extreme differences in looks would make a casual looker go Oo then understand it.
